M. Jacks Fire & Safety Equipment Company is a Texas Corporation founded in 1949 by the late Morris Jacks. M. Jacks Fire & Safety has been dedicated to offering exemplary service and high quality products at a fair price for over 61 years. By promoting innovative products as they became available during the 50's and 60's, M. Jacks Fire & Safety grew into one of Texas' Premier Fire Equipment Companies. M. Jacks Fire & Safety was one of the first companies to promote the use of Multi-Purpose (ABC) Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishers and Automatic Kitchen Hood Fire Protection Systems.

As M. Jacks Fire & Safety grew, Morris Jacks realized that the Fire Equipment Industry needed new ways to improve and grow, learn more about servicing and recharging new types of fire extinguishers and also needed a means of providing input into the tructuring of national standards. To address these needs, Morris and a group of prominent fire equipment distributors from around the United States met to discuss the organization of a national association. In 1963 the National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors (NAFED) was chartered in which M. Jacks Fire & Safety is a charter member and remains very active today.

Through NAFED meetings and networking with other Fire Equipment Companies throughout the United States, Morris noted that individual states had begun regulating Fire Equipment Companies and testing and licensing individuals working for these companies. In the late 60's and early 70's Morris began meeting with other leading Fire Equipment Companies in the state of Texas to discuss this regulation. As a result of these meetings, legislation was passed implementing Texas Insurance Code Article 5.43-1, which impowered the Texas State Fire Marshal's Office to regulate Fire Equipment Companies doing service work in the State of Texas. In 1972 for his efforts and dedication to the protection of the consumers of the State of Texas, Morris Jacks was invited by then Governor Preston Smith to witness the signing of this legislation into law. Today Fire Equipment Companies must be registered and individuals must pass a written exam and be licensed by the Texas Department of Insurance State Fire Marshal’s Office.

M. Jacks Fire & Safety has evolved through the years but has maintained the original values and philosophies set forth by Morris Jacks. Roger Walton worked under Morris as Vice President and Sales Manager for 15 years before becoming President of M. Jacks Fire & Safety in 1975. Roger retired in 1980, at which time M. Jacks Fire & Safety became an employee owned and operated corporation. Three of M. Jacks Fire and Safety Equipment Company’s current officers were hired and worked for Morris before his death. President, Jim Shelton, was hired by Morris in 1968, Vice-President, Ray Garza, was hired by Morris in 1973, and Vice-President, Larry Angle, was hired by Morris in 1974.

M. Jacks Fire & Safety is involved in numerous community programs. M. Jacks Fire & Safety donates the Carbonic Gas to local High Schools for use in their mascots. In 1985, when the original Ronald McDonald House was constructed in San Antonio, M. Jacks Fire & Safety was a “Pearl” contributor and continues to support the Ronald McDonald House.

In an effort to recognize “Excellence in Sales and Customer Service”, Ansul Fire Protection Corporation developed a Master Ring Program. In 1987, Jim Shelton was 1 of 6 in the United States to be selected to receive this award.

Fire Equipment Companies in the State of Texas realizing that NAFED provided information to address national issues felt that it was necessary to investigate a method of receiving and disseminating information to address state issues. In the early 90’s a group of fire equipment professionals representing prominent Fire Equipment Companies began meeting and discussing the organization of a State Association. Through the leadership of Jim Shelton, Larry Angle and other fire equipment professionals the Fire Equipment Distributors of Texas (FEDOT) was chartered in 1993. In 1997 Larry Angle was elected as President of FEDOT and served in that capacity for 5 years and currently serves on the FEDOT Board of Directors.

Through the efforts of Larry Angle while he was President of FEDOT and the FEDOT Board of Directors, the Texas State Fire Extinguisher Advisory Council was reformed. The Fire Extinguisher Advisory Council made up of 7 members serves in an advisory capacity to the Commissioner of Insurance on issues relating to Fire Extinguisher Companies. Texas Commissioner of Insurance, Jose Montemayor, appointed Larry Angle to this advisory council in January 2002.

As technology advances, M. Jacks Fire & Safety will remain dedicated to upholding the high standards established by Morris Jacks. Through the professionalism of it’s owners and employees, M. Jacks Fire & Safety will continue to be active in shaping the future of the Fire Equipment Industry.
